Eye Exams at Optical Pulse

A comprehensive eye exam is about much more than updating your prescription. Our optometrists take the time to assess your full ocular health — detecting early signs of conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration before symptoms appear.

What to Expect

Your appointment at Optical Pulse is thorough, unhurried, and tailored to your needs. Here is a step-by-step overview of what happens during a comprehensive eye exam.

  1. Health & History Review

We begin by reviewing your personal and family health history, any current medications, and any vision concerns or symptoms you may have noticed since your last exam.

  2. Visual Acuity Test

You will read letters on a chart at various distances to measure how clearly you see. This establishes your baseline and helps determine whether a prescription update is needed.

  3. Refraction Assessment

Using a phoropter, your optometrist fine-tunes your prescription by asking you to compare lens options. This determines the exact correction needed for glasses or contact lenses.

  4. Eye Pressure Check (Tonometry)

A quick, painless test measures the pressure inside your eyes. Elevated pressure can be an early indicator of glaucoma, which has no symptoms in its early stages.

  5. Slit-Lamp Examination

A specialised microscope allows your optometrist to examine the front structures of your eye — the cornea, iris, and lens — for signs of cataracts, dry eye, or other conditions.

  6. Retinal Examination

Your optometrist examines the back of your eye, including the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. This can reveal signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, and macular degeneration.

  7. Results & Recommendations

Your optometrist will walk you through the findings, answer any questions, and provide a prescription if needed. If any concerns are identified, they will discuss next steps and referrals.

What to Bring

To make the most of your appointment and ensure a smooth visit, please bring the following:

Your current glasses

Bring any glasses you currently wear, even if you feel the prescription is outdated. Your optometrist will assess them as part of the exam.

Your contact lenses

If you wear contacts, bring your current lenses or the packaging so your optometrist can review the brand, power, and fit.

Provincial health card (OHIP)

Your Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card is required for covered exams. OHIP covers annual eye exams for children under 20 and adults 65 and older.

Extended health insurance information

If you have private or employer-sponsored vision coverage, bring your insurance card or plan details. We can help you understand what your plan covers.

List of current medications

Some medications can affect your vision or eye health. A list of what you are currently taking helps your optometrist give you the most accurate assessment.

Family eye health history

Conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration can run in families. Knowing your family history helps us monitor for early signs.
